Village

Venzone and the writer Ernest Hemingway

The location of the American colossal movie  “Farewell to the arms” from Ernest Hemingway’s novel, Venzone is an extraordinary example of post-earthquake anastylosis reconstruction. From the outer defensive walls, dating back to the 1200s, whose perimeter has been almost entirely preserved, you’ll go through the Gate of San Genesio to reach the main square. Piazza del Municipio lies at the crossroads of regular streets recalling the Roman origins of the village, whose Town Hall makes a jewel of Venetian Gothic architecture. At a short distance stands the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea, which holds precious fresco paintings and statues partially salvaged from the 1976 earthquake. Nearby, an old burial chapel is now custodian to the “mummies”.
