Square

Gorizia - piazza Vittoria

Piazza Vittoria is a beautiful large square organized in the 18th century on the site of what was called “Travnik”, the Slovenian word for grassland, as it had been used as pastureland and the location of farming trade shows before. The square is overlooked by the imposing church of Sant’Ignazio di Loyola, an admirable example of Italian Baroque, though contaminated by two onion-shaped campaniles reminiscent of the Austrian style. Today’s Police Headquarters are housed in the residence of family Della Torre, later the Government Palace. On the square stands the birthplace of Carlo Michelstaedter, where the philosopher shot himself at the age of 21 after having a bad argument with his mother. To the opposite side lies Palazzo Paternolli, whose attic was the place where Michelstaedter used to study with his schoolmates Nino Paternolli and Enrico Mreule.
