Grado - old town and the poet Biagio Marin

Biagio Marin (Grado 1891-1895) was a poet and writer, especially popular for his poems in the dialect of Grado, his birthplace. Every single corner in Grado resounds with his verses, including the port, the narrow streets and the lagoon. As a young man, Marin attended the Stadtgymnasium in Gorizia when the town still belonged to the Austrian Empire and there he started to join the Irredentist movement. After the First World War, he worked as a teacher in Gorizia and made friends with the cultural élite of the town, including philosopher Carlo Michelstaedter. To the town of Gorizia he dedicated a collection of poems in 1940, which he re-edited in 1956 by adding the definition “the mutilated town” in the title.

The house of poet BIAGIO MARIN lies near Campo dei Patriarchi, where two early Christian churches stand to bear witness to the glorious past of the island as the seat of the Patriarchs of Aquileia before and of Grado after. The father of the poet, Antonio, run a tavern attended by fisherment and craftsmen and often took his son along when he sailed his small boat to Istria to buy oil and wine. Biagio Marin was the director of the bathing and spa establishment of Grado from 1923 to 1938, but was later forced to leave his job because he was suspected of anti-Fascist activities. The island of Grado resounds with his poems at all spots, in the narrow streets and small squares of the old town, along the dam and in the lagoon.
