Temple of Zeus

The Temple of Zeus is located in a prominent position in the center of the sanctuary of Altea and is its most important building. It was the largest temple in the Peloponnese and is characterized as the most perfect example of Doric temple architecture. It was erected by the Ileians in honor of Zeus with the spoils from his victories against the clover cities. Its construction began in 470 BC. and was completed in 456 BC.
