Church of Taxiarches Gourias

The church of Taxiarches in Gouria is the katholikon of a small monastery and is built in the center of a walled courtyard, among pines, cypresses and palm trees. The temple was originally built as a simple single-aisle vaulted room with an arch on the east side, while in later times it was extended to the west with the addition of a narthex, which had a lower roof from the rest of the temple. Taxiarches of Gouria save the most important iconographic program of the 16th century. in Aetolia, which is an inseparable continuation of the high art of Byzantium. Although the renowned painter of Gouria preferred to remain anonymous, many scholars recognize in his hand his great artistic value and his work can be compared with the wall paintings of Theophanes the Cretan in the catholics of the Great Lavra and the Monastery of Stavronikita at Mount Athos.
