The history of the church originates from a foundation decree issued by the bishop of Bamberg in 1399, at the request of the subjects of what was still a modest village, motivated by the distance that separates Tarvisio from the mother parish of Camporosso and the consequent difficulty in attending religious functions due to the frequent rains, the often flooded rivers, and the heavy winter snowfalls. One better reason was, however, that the majority of the faithful in Tarvisio spoke only the Venetian, Friulian, and German languages, while at the parish church of Camporosso the language used in the rites and sermons was exclusively Slavic, which was completely incomprehensible to them.
