Battle of Lepanto

The naval battle that took place on October 7, 1571, with the name Naval Battle of Nafpaktos, remained in history, firstly because of naval battle, between the united fleets of Spain, Venice, Genoa, the Knights of Malta, the Duchy of Savoy, the Duchy of Urbino, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Pope under the name Lega Santa (Holy Union), and secondly the united fleet of the Ottoman Empire, at the entrance of the Gulf of Patras - near the islands of southern Echinades and Cape Skros. Its name, however, did not come from the city of Naupactus, but from the name (location) of the Gulf where the naval battle took place, because those days the whole Gulf was called by the Venetians "Gulf of Naupactus". Western historians use the name Naval Battle of Lepanto from the medieval name of the city.
