Geographically isolated, Val Resia has conditioned the lives of the communities that have occupied it over the centuries, ever since the settlement of a group of shepherds of Slavic origin fleeing the barbarian invasions of the sixth century. A Slovenian dialect is still spoken here and ancient traditions have been handed down. One of the most characteristic is the Resian Carnival, in which music and dance are among the most interesting events. Resian dance is accompanied by typical musical instruments: the cïtira (violin) and the bünkula (cello).
