Inaugurated in 1740 under the name of Teatro Nuovo, but better known in the city by the name of its owner and founder Bandeu, the theatre has lived through turbulent times, just like those of the city that hosts it. Restored and upgraded by the architect Andrea Scala in 1854 and by others later, the theatre finally reopened with a performance of Giuseppe Verdi's Aida, to which it was then dedicated in the wake of the city's irredentist aspirations. Disrupted by rationalist interventions during the twenty years of Fascism, it has recently been respectfully restored to its original appearance.
