Trieste - Rossetti Theatre

Now home to the Teatro Stabile of Friuli Venezia Giulia and dedicated to the Trieste statesman and scholar Domenico Rossetti, the imposing theatre building was erected in 1878 in the eclectic style based on the design of Nicolò Bruno. Its most famous and spectacular feature is the hemispherical dome above the stalls, which in the 1950s could be opened to the heavens, whereas today it is frescoed with a star pattern. Throughout its history, the theatre has hosted many important names in music, including Richard Strauss in 1905 and Maria Callas in 1948, and more recently it has discovered a vocation as a stage for major musical productions.
