Theatre & Concert Hall

Trieste - Verdi Theatre

The Trieste opera and ballet theatre was erected in 1801 following the plans of the architect Matteo Pertsch from Trieste. Its exterior is reminiscent of La Scala in Milan, a clear tribute by the designer to his mentor Piermarini. The interiors were decorated by Giannantonio Selva, also known as the decorator of La Fenice in Venice. Originally named Teatro Grande, it was dedicated to the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi in 1901, only a few hours after his passing, and the first building ever to honour him in this manner.
