Castle of Kanina

The castle was built in the c. IV BC The castle has an area of about 3.6 ha and a height of about 380m above sea level.

In the system of fortification walls, several stages of construction are observed.

The first phase is represented by the remains of the wall of the Hellenistic period, traces of which were discovered on all sides of the castle, which indicates the existence in ancient times of a complete enclosure, which followed the natural relief of the hill. In the wall of the Hellenistic period, the square isodomic system was used.

In late antiquity, when the surrounding walls of the castle were rebuilt. Here we are dealing with a wall built with the "Opus mixtum" technique.

During the early Middle Ages (10th-12th centuries), the reconstructions and renovations of the enclosing wall continued. The walls of this phase, not all of them, are based on earlier constructions.

Then, it is represented by the surrounding wall (XIII-XIV centuries). Also in this period we have the reinforcement of the surrounding wall with towers.

Inside the castle there are traces of dwellings, as well as other construction elements such as roads, canals, terraces, etc...

Several construction techniques are observed in the fortification wall system.

On the wall of the Hellenistic period, in which we used the square isodomic system. The shape of the blocks discovered in the wall is square, some of them tend to be trapezoidal. The blocks have almost the same width and height. The largest ones are up to 1.5 m long, while those with an average length reach up to 85 cm. The height of the blocks varies between 35-38 cm. The blocks are dry-laid in horizontal, regular rows, are well-kissed and have flat faces.

In late antiquity, the construction technique "Opus mixtum" was used, a technique which consists in the use of layers of alternating stones and bricks. The thickness of the wall is 2 m, but there are points where it moves from 1.5-1.9 m. The connection between the stones is made with strong and abundant mortar.

Early Middle Ages period (10th-12th century) where the wall was built mainly of medium, unworked stones and reused ancient blocks, connected between them with strong lime mortar. The walls were reinforced with longitudinal and transverse beams connected between them.

Then, it is represented by the surrounding wall (XIII-XIV century), where the wall of this phase has been preserved 5-9 m high and 1.30-1.65 m thick. At an equal height of 0.8 -1 m, the wall is traversed by beams with a round section, with a diameter of 0.15 m. Also in this period we have the reinforcement of the surrounding wall with towers.
