Island and Forest of Zvernec

The island of Zverneci is located in the southern part of the Narta Lagoon and is covered with an evergreen vegetation dominated by the cypress plant (Cupressus sempervirens). The zone of high vegetation is dominated by Cupressus sempervirens to the extent of over 80% and to a lesser extent by the species of Qurcus ilex, Quercus pubescens and Pinus spp., which reach a height of 8-10m. The vegetation cover is quite dense. The plant layer of the bushes is dominated by species of Myrtus communis, Pistacia lentiscus, Laurus nobilis, Rubus spp., Phillyrea angustifolia, Olea olaster, etc. The layer of herbaceous vegetation is rarer and the most frequent species are: Chrysopogon gryllus, Asparagus acutifolius, Dactylis glomerata, Desmazieria rigida, etc. Under this area, dominated by cypress - Cupressus sempervirens (at a height of 1-2 m to 20 m above sea level), the rocks (soft massif) support a plant association dominated by salt-loving (halophilic) species such as: Suaeda maritima, limonium oleifolium. Limonium vulgare, Arthrocnemum glaucum, Halimione portulacoides, Elymus pycnanthus, these characteristic species of the association Suaedetum maritimae. (Research Center for Rural Development, 2021)
