Vucina Bay

Žuljana is an old settlement on the Pelješac peninsula and is one of the few places next to the town of Ston, which on the peninsula bear a name of Roman origin, and is mentioned in historical sources as early as the end of the 12th century. Thanks to the ideal geographical position of the bay in the central southeastern part of Pelješac, Žuljana was a convenient shelter and a well-known anchorage in all historical periods. At the southern end of the bay is the islet of Lirica with a lighthouse at the entrance to the Mljet channel. The bay is open to the west with a view of Korčula, Lastovo and Mljet, and due to the protruding headlands and shallow coastal areas, the bay was the site of many ancient and medieval shipwrecks.

Due to increased maritime traffic in the sea channel between Pelješac and Korčula, there are several underwater sites near the islet of Lirica near Pelješac. One of them refers to the remains of an ancient shipwreck at a depth of 45 meters. Amphorae, an iron anchor, remains of a wooden ship structure and wooden pegs were found. It is assumed that this shipwreck occurred due to a strong storm that carried the ship to Lirica, where the ship broke up and sank thirty meters to the north. The found amphorae date back to the end of the 1st century BC or the first half of the 1st century. In addition, it is assumed that some parts of the cargo, ship's equipment and wooden structures are still lying on the bottom of the sea, covered by a surface layer of sand.

The entire bay of Žuljana is rich in sandy and pebble beaches, and the abundance of caves attracts many diving enthusiasts who explore the rich underwater life, reefs and passages. One of the most beautiful beaches is Vučine beach. With a gentle entrance to the sea, which is almost always at the ideal temperature for swimming and shallow, this beach is also a must for sport fishermen. The beach is isolated, hidden in the natural shade of tall pine trees, which makes it ideal for a quiet family vacation away from the hectic everyday life. The shallows are ideal for children's play in the sand, and with the natural shade, it is also possible to have a relaxing day on the beach.

Fun fact: Diving enthusiasts can rent diving equipment at the diving center and explore 6 shipwrecks around Žuljana at depths of 15 to 45 meters.
