ZOI Wine-Growing Localities Dingač and Postup

All true wine lovers in Croatia know that Pelješac is a synonym for quality red wines. At the same time, two viticultural positions are particularly highlighted in their notebooks - Dingač and Postup.

Dingač and Postup are the most famous locations for growing vines on the Pelješac peninsula and both bear the ZOI label - protected label of origin! This means that the wines whose grapes were grown in the mentioned locations have certain distinctive characteristics that make them particularly expensive. This also means that the production of wine is limited and that the soils of both locations give specific flavours to the wines. Vineyard owners must preserve the landscape features of the vineyard locations. Supporting dry walls must be preserved, and for their construction or repair it is mandatory to use materials from the mentioned positions. It is not allowed to bring soil from another location. The soils are poor, the positions are sunny and protected from strong winds. Diseases are also not common. The locations Dingač and Postup are very similar winegrowing locations, with the fact that Dingač has slightly steeper slopes.

Dingač is the most famous wine-growing location in the Republic of Croatia, and wines from that area have been valued and internationally recognized for decades. Dingač is the first protected premium wine in Croatia. It was protected in 1965, while Postup was protected in 1967 as a superior wine.

Postup and Dingač are also names for wines from the mentioned locations, which is not a common practice in Croatia, but when you taste either of these two wines, you know exactly where it was produced. You also know that both wines are made from an autochthonous Croatian grape variety - plavac mali! These are dark red crystalline wines, and the taste of the wine itself depends on the production technology and the way the wine is stored. All wines are of medium to high alcohol content and have pronounced aromas and low acids. Slightly astringent, highly varietal wines that simply need to be tasted and enjoyed in order to know more about Postup, Dingač and Pelješac.

When visiting the wineries that produce Dingač and Postup, be sure to take out your cameras and enjoy the very picturesque areas of the sunny slopes of Pelješac bordered by dry walls, the traditional skill of dry construction.

Fun fact: The berries of plavac mali ripen for a very long time, so during harvest there are dried berries, ripe berries and underripe ones on the same bunch, which gives the wine a specific totality of taste.
