Putnikovici Winery and Viticulture Museum

The Pelješac peninsula, home of the plavac mali variety and the widely known Dingač and Postup, is proud of a unique museum in Croatia, the Museum of Winemaking and Viticulture Putnikovići. The entire peninsula, including Putniković, a small town in the heart of rocky Pelješac, has survived on vines and wine production for centuries. In order to maintain the tradition, but also to preserve the memory for new generations, the Putnikovići Museum tells the story of the history of wine and people both with its space and numerous valuable exhibits.

The Putnikovići Winery and Viticulture Museum covers a total of 800 square meters and is divided into three levels, that is, three floors. Each floor tells a separate story. The viticultural ethnographic collection on the ground floor shows the process of wine production from the vineyard, harvesting, muddling, fermentation and aging in ancient times and in recent times. In addition, the tools that were once used in these procedures are on display. The first floor was occupied by the Historical Collection, which exhibits items from the rich past of viticulture and winemaking in Croatia; from fossils about 13 million years old, from the Roman era (ancient vessels and amphorae) through the Middle Ages (old sickles and old vases), all the way to the new era. The attic, on the other hand, hides the collection Wine in the tradition of living. It shows the rural environment in which wine was drunk in wine cellars, as well as the urban environment in which wine was poured from specially decorated jugs and glasses, and wine was also used for medicinal purposes.

The museum also presents a Monument to the hard worker. In addition to representing the tradition and wealth of Croatian viticulture, the Putnikovići Winery Museum also points to the economic importance of winemaking for people from this area who have been engaged in winemaking since time immemorial. Many crops do not thrive in such rocky areas, so the vine was the basis of farming, especially in Dalmatia. This museum is also a kind of monument to the hard worker, who thanks to the stormy historical circumstances of this region, in addition to planting and caring for vines, had to defend his plantations from various attackers throughout history.

Fun fact: The Putnikovići Winery and Viticulture Museum was opened thanks to the agricultural cooperative Putniković, whose founders and owners are families from Putnikovići and surrounding towns. This is a unique example in Croatia and in the world that a cooperative has opened a museum.
