Monument

Ljubljanica Sluice Gate

Plečnik’s locks have the appearance of a triumphal arch for the water leaving the city. It represents an architectural upgrade of the two metal gates mechanism with a monumental style. The three stone-clad towers are reminiscent of Egyptian temple pylons, and in front of them are Doric columns carved with vessels and vultures, an echo of Etruscan culture. On the other side stand low Ionic columns with stylized heads carrying a transverse footbridge. Plečnik drew from architectural history, but never copied anything, instead always reinterpreting it in his own way.

(Jože Plečnik, 1939/1945)
