Dragon Bridge / Jubilee Bridge – Franz Joseph I

Plans for this bridge were painted by the architect Jurij Zaninović in collaboration with Prof Josef Melanom. The latter, like Plečnik, studied in Vienna under Prof Wagner. The Art Nouveau bridge was the first reinforced concrete bridge in Slovenia, and the road was covered with asphalt. The inscription in Slovene and the relief were in honour of the
40th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The architect was forced to cut costs, so he achieved the appearance of stone using stucco concrete, and the dragons originally envisioned in bronze were made of copper sheeting at Vienna’s AM factory Beschorner. Gas lamps designed in the Art Nouveau style were also made in Vienna.
