Butcher’s Bridge

According to Plečnik’s plan, the Butcher’s Bridge was set to be built as part of the Markets, which were completed in 1944. Plečnik designed it as a covered loggia over the Ljubljanica, but it was never constructed. In 2008, the city administration announced a competition for the regulation of a wider area of markets and selected a new proposal. The Butcher’s Bridge is in the shape of a thin platform supported by a steel structure. Glass edges and thin railings create lightness in the space. Bronze sculptures by the sculptor Jakov Brdar give the impression of a gallery above the river. The bridge connects both levels of Plečnik’s market with Petkovškov nabrežje and are also designed as slopes to provide access to the disabled. Under the bridge is also a new port for river vessels.
