Angelokastro Castle

Near the village of Angelokastro in the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania and specifically on a verdant hill are the few ruins of a late Byzantine castle. The foundation of the castle is placed in the middle of the 13th century and based on its name it is probably a building of the Angelodoukades Komnenos. In the past, the location of the castle was of particular strategic importance as it controlled the passage to the interior of Aetolia. Today, a part of the defensive fortification is preserved, as well as the stone-built church of Agios Georgios, which is surrounded by tall trees and has a unique view of the green plain that stretches in front of it. This point of interest is Plain and Rural. Suitable season to visit: All-year-round. It is not accessible through public transport. It has no fee or ticket. Visitable hours: Free Access. Source of photographic material: Personal Archive of Mr. Giannakopoulos Ioannis.
