The birthplace of writer MAURO CORONA, Erto e Casso lie to the other side of Mount Toc, the mountain that slid down into the Vajont dam and caused a dreadful tragedy in 1963. The two joined villages feature a typical rural architecture, with dwellings covered in rosy stone. Erto is home to an exhaustive documentation centre reporting about the Vajont dam disaster in the Visitor’s centre of the Park of the Friulian Dolomites. The dam crown can be visited with a guide. The Vajont tragedy lies certainly behind the plot of CARLO SGORLON’s novel “L’ultima valle”, though it is called by another name and turned into a universal event.
