Valcellina and Mauro Corona

Mauro Corona (Piné, 1950) is known as a wood sculptor and excellent mountaineer beside being a successful writer. In his innumerable books he writes about the places he lives in and likes most: Erto e Casso, Val Tramontina , the Vajont dam, Valcellina.

The setting of several books by MAURO CORONA, this Alpine valley crossed by the stream Cellina is disseminated with small villages with a strong identity. The main town is Montereale Valcellina, today home to an Archaeological Museum and the Museum of the Hydroelectric Plant of Malnisio. The town is the historical setting of the story of miller Menocchio hit by the Inquisition proceedings, whose charming personality is fully described in “The Cheese and the Worms” by CARLO GINZBURG. Other villages in Valcellina include Andreis, with its houses featuring stone walls and wooden balconies and staircases and the Museum of Peasantry Arts and Civilization; Barcis and its lake, a favourite destination for outdoor activities of all sorts; the gorge of river Cellina, a spectacular canyon with steep walls; the forest of Prescudin, where a network of signposted tracks takes you through lavish wildlife;  Cimolais, surrounded by the high peaks of the Park of Friulian Dolomites, including the famous Campanile of Val Montanaia; Claut, a real paradise for both outdoor sports enthusiasts and history lovers, as the village is near a site where dinosaur prints from 215 million years ago were found and is home to the Museo della casa clautana, a museum about rural housing; Vajont, the setting of TULLIO AVOLEDO’s first book translated in English, “The Girl from Vajont”.
