Santa Marizza and the writer Sergio Maldini

Sergio Maldini (Firenze 1923-Udine 1998) lived his childhood years in Udine. His deeply rooted affection to Friuli and the purchase of a house in Santa Marizza in 1981 inspired his novels “La casa a Nordest” and “La stazione di Varmo”. He describes Friuli as a dreamlike land, a poetic place of suspended landscapes, which he sees through the lenses of his childhood memories.

The country house writer SERGIO MALDINI bought when he returned to Friuli is found at Via dei Due Platani 27 in Santa Marizza. The residence had belonged to countess Giuliana Canciani Florio and was restored by architect Maria Antonietta Cester Toso. This house is the literary place of Maldini’s most famous novel, “La casa a Nordest”, which was awarded the Campiello Prize. Santa Marizza is where also writer ELIO BARTOLINI lived in a villa he called Palassat. Recalled in his novel “Chi abita la villa”, Villa Bartolini is a Venetian style house built in the 1600s by counts Cernazai on the site of a former monastery.
