Valvasone Arzene and the poet and writer Pier Paolo Pasolini

Pier Paolo Pasolini (Bologna, 1922–Rome,1975) was a poet, novelist, philosopher, thinker and director. He stayed in Friuli several times, as his mother Susanna was born in Casarsa. He attended grammar school in Sacile in 1928, and lived in a house near the Cathedral until 1932. He lived several years as a young man between Casarsa and Versuta from 1943 to 1950, when he worked as a teacher in Valvasone and took an active part to the local political life with the Italian Communist Party. This long period was very fertile for his literary career, as he wrote “Poems in Casarsa” and “The Turks in Friul” in Friulian language.

As you walk on the cobbled streets of this charming medieval village, you’ll reach the recently restored Castle, which preserves remarkable frescoes and a small theatre from the late 1700s. The Cathedral has a 16th century organ, whose shutters were painted by Pordenone. The atmosphere of pastime in Friuli resounds throughout the village. The secondary school of Valvasone bears memories of young PIER PAOLO PASOLINI, who debuted as a teacher here after his degree (from 1945). The poet wrote about the village: “Valvasone lies today beyond the track of the main roads. It has become a silent town. This is way I cherish it so much.”
