Village

Verzegnis and the writer Carlo Sgorlon

Carlo Sgorlon ((Cassacco, 1930–Udine, 2009) was deeply bonded to his birthplace, especially to the rural civilization of Friuli, its myths, legends and archaic traditions, which he often described in his books. His family has recently donated his collection of books and documents to the Municipality of Udine.

In CARLO SGORLON’s novel “L'Armata dei fiumi perduti”, the story of the Cossak army’s invasion of Friuli is told, when the Nazi Regime promised them they could get the territory as their new fatherland. The Cossaks established their headquarters in Verzegnis, in an inn called "Stella d'oro”, where an inscription recalls the invasion still today. Verzegnis is now a small village at the mouth of the five valleys of Carnia. The area is rich in natural beauties, including the Lake of Verzegnis. Some jewels of the arts also stand out, and namely the Church of Pieve di San Martino with furnishings and frescoes from the 1700s and the Church of Santo Stefano in Cesclans. Contemporary art is also found in the Art Park, a green area designed by Egidio Marzona, a publisher and collector who invited some artists of Arte Povera, Land Art and Minimal Art to contribute their works, including Bruce Neuman, Richard Long, Sol lewitt, Mario Merz, Michelangelo Pistoletto.
