Landscape View Point

Tarvisio - Slizza canyon

Lying at the crossroads of Austria and Slovenia, Tarvisio has ancient origins and a modern look, the ideal place to go for shopping and tasting a number of food specialities, the result of the contamination between the Friulian, Carinthian and Slovenian cuisines. Here Ilaria Tuti set her début crime novel “Flowers over the Inferno”, which starts with this description: “In the woodland, amidst steep rocky walls, down the canyon leading to the stream, between the emerald green ponds smelling of ice, something hides”. You’ll easily recognize the Orrido dello Slizza, a suggestive canyon you’ll reach walking down a wooden walkway (2 km long, about 100 m descent). The deep gorge dug by the stream offers breathtaking views of the forest and the ponds. From here, you can easily reach Fusine lakes (about 7 km away), two of the best lakes in the region and an ideal destination for hikers both in summertime and under the snow. Another famous lake for its emerald green water is Predil Lake (or Raibl in Slovenian), at the border with Slovenia. Near the lake, the old mine of Raibl was a leading lead and zinc mine for centuries. After it was dismissed in 1990, nature and silence have taken over the place, but the mine is still a symbol and was dedicated a Mining Tradition Museum.
