Gemona del Friuli and the writer Ilaria Tuti

Born in Gemona del Friuli, Ilaria Tuti is a young writer who has gained an international reputation for her detective stories focussed on police commissioner Teresa Battaglia, a lady with a strong personality engaged in the solution of cases set in Friuli Venezia Giulia, where the writer lives.

The birthplace and residence of writer ILARIA TUTI, Gemona was founded in pre-Roman times and developed in the Middle Ages. Almost entirely destroyed during an earthquake in 1976, it has now recovered its medieval aspect. A nice walk will lead you from Piazza del Municipio with its Renaissance Town Hall along via Bini, a medieval high street flanked by noble residences, including Palazzo Elti, home to the Town Museum with a collection of precious works by Venetian and Friulian painters. Few steps down the street, a short climb will take you to the site of the Castle, the last edifice being rebuilt after the earthquake, from where you’ll enjoy a beautiful view over the valley below and the mountains of the Carnic Alps. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta features a Gothic façade and a surprising 7 m tall statue of Saint Christopher. A recent restoration of the area below the church has unveiled an ossuary annexed to a burial chapel dedicated to Saint Michael, with fresco paintings on the walls. In the Church Museum nearby, a number of sacred objects are exhibited, including a precious monstrance that makes one of the most remarkable works of Friulian goldsmithing, manufactured by Niccolò Lionello in the 1400s.
