Palazzo Werdenberg was the seat of the Stadtgymnasium, the high school where CARLO MICHELSTAEDTER and BIAGIO MARIN studied. Today the building houses the Biblioteca Statale Isontina, custodian to a collection of Michelstaedter’s belongings, including a remarkable group of drawings, paintings, letters and manuscripts. The collection was donated by Paula, the philosopher’s sister, in 1973. Before being a library, the palace, built on the initiative of baron Verda von Werdenberg in 1634, was the seminary of the Jesuit order, which justifies its austere appearance, as the Baroque style is only seen in the stucco work decorations on top of the main staircase.
