Cathedral of Sacred Jesus Hearth EW

The Cathedral of Jesus' Heart in Sarajevo, commonly referred as the Sarajevo Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the seat of the Vrhbosanski Archbishop, and center of Catholic worship in the city. The Cathedral is located in the city's Old Town district.

The Cathedral of Sacred Jesus' Heart is one of the most representative neo-gothic churches in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The cathedral was designed by Josip Vancaš, who took the inspiration from the Notre Dame Cathedral in Dijon, France and St. Teyn Cathedral in Prague. In 1997, only two years after the war ended in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral and sent a reconciliation message from Sarajevo. His statue stands today in front of the entrance of the church.

Thanks to Vancaš’ great talent, Sarajevo’s cathedral ended up becoming an entirely new and authentic building, and also fits in beautifully with its surroundings, with Gazi Husrev Bey’s Hamam (Turkish bath) in the background.

The interior of the church is richly decorated and it was the famous Italian-German painter, Alexander Maximilian Seitz, who did the frescos.

The Cathedral of Jesus' Heart was built in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an important Catholic concept. Work began on August 25, 1884, and was completed in the same month in 1889. The Bishop of Dubrovnik was present for the opening. The building was damaged during the Siege of Sarajevo, but was not completely destroyed, and the damage has since been repaired. The building is often used as a symbol of the city: The design above the door to the Cathedral is part of the flag and seal of Sarajevo Canton.
