Square

Vas. Georgiou A square

Vassileos Georgiou AD Square, better known as Georgiou AD Square or simply Georgiou Square, is the central and most popular square of Patras. It was created in 1829 during the Kapodistrian government as the city had to be rebuilt because it had been completely destroyed during the Revolution of 1821. It has changed many names over the years, from Dimokratia, to Kalamogdarti, Othonos, Central, Thomopoulos, Ethniki, Polygenesis and finally to George I in 1863 in honor of King George I. Pericles Kalamogdartis read in the square the first constitution of Greece in 1843, hence one of the names. In 1875 the two beautiful fountains were installed, which still exist today, after an order from Italy. The square has been renovated many times, the last one in 2006, and is very often a center of cultural events, especially during the Patras Carnival. This point of interest is Plain and Urban. Suitable season to visit: All-year-round. It is accessible through public transport. It has no fee or ticket. Source of photographic material: Wikipedia.
