Fortification of Koukouvitsa (Korifi)

Koukouvitsa or Koryfis Castle is located at the top of two consecutive hills and is only 2.5 km from the homonymous community. It was discovered in 1909, but excavations began in 2001 and lasted 4 years. The findings in combination with the historical data reveal that the fort dates back to the beginning of the 4th century BC, after the end of the Peloponnesian War, while it was erected by a city of Pisatida and was used exclusively for military purposes. The impressive walls with a total length of 86 meters and a maximum surviving height of 3 meters were built of large rectangular porphyry bricks. The imposing entrance gate is located to the east and is particularly fortified and protected by two towers on either side, while a third tower was discovered a few meters south. It is the only ancient citadel that has survived in the northern part of Ileia. This point of interest is Mountainous and Rural. Suitable season to visit: All-year-round. It is not accessible through public transport. It has no fee or ticket. Visitable hours: Open-air site. Always open. Source of photographic material: Odysseus portal, copyright belongs to YPOA.
