Timau and Valle del But

Timau, a small hamlet in the municipality of Paluzza in the But Valley in Carnia, links its identity to the local language, which belongs to the family of South-Bavarian dialects. Along with Sauris, Timau is part of a German-speaking enclave living in Carnia, the descendants of two groups of miners who moved here from Carinthia, the former around the year 1000, the latter at the end of the 1200s. The name Timau comes from Old German Tischlbong. A border area and the field of harsh battles during the First World War, the village is now home to a Great War Museum and to the Memorial of the Carnic Women Carriers, a group of bold women from the area who brought food and weapons to the Italian soldiers up in the mountains, and were often killed on the way. To celebrate these women, an army barracks in Paluzza was consecrated to one of them, Maria Plozner Mentil. It was the only one in Italy to bear the name of a woman, but  has been dismissed and demolished since. The Carnic carriers are also the main characters in Ilaria Tuti’s novel “A Flower on the Rock”.
