Krestena

Krestena is a small town in the Prefecture of Ileia and the capital of the Municipality of Andritsaina-Krestenwn. It is 20 km from Pyrgos and 40 km from Andritsaina. In ancient times it was called Selinountas, due to the river of the same name that is located in the area. The current name is said to have been given to the town, from a map with settlements in the area, found and named Chrestena or Christina, in honor of a princess or daughter of a local ruler during the Venetian occupation. The population of Krestena reached about 5,000, a number that decreased significantly after the large fires that hit the area in 2007 and so according to the 2011 census, the population now stands at 1,862. This point of interest is Flat and Urban. Suitable season to visit: All-year-round. It is accessible through public transport. It has no fee or ticket.
