Archaeological Site of Skillous

The archeological site of Skillous is located at a distance of 3.5 kilometers south of Olympia and specifically at the site of Profitis Ilias in Makrisia, Ileia. The name of the ancient city comes from the plant skilla, which grows in abundance in the area. Inside there were several buildings and temples, such as that of Athena Skillountia. In about 400 BC. the Spartans dominated the area and ceded to Xenophon a fairly large part of the ancient city. Xenophon settled there for many years and built the Temple of Artemis of Ephesus. Today, according to the excavations that have been carried out, ruins of buildings, a cemetery, as well as ruins of the Temple of Athena have been found. This point of interest is Flat and Rural. Suitable season to visit: All-year-round. It is not accessible through public transport. It has no fee or ticket. Source of photographic material: Tourist guide of the Municipality of Andritsaina - Krestena, Tourist guide of the Former Municipality of Skillountia, President of the local community of Skillountia Mr. Chris Tsamis.
