«MARCH 13, 1829: THE LIBERATION OF ANTIRRIO"-EVENT: ANTIRRIO 1821-1829»

Event entitled "Antirrio 1821-1829". The event consists of two parts.

In the first part, Theodoropoulou Paraskevi-Tatiana, philologist, general secretary of the association, will deliver a speech on "Antirrio 1821-1829".

In the second part, Irini Sarioglou, researcher - historian, Assistant Professor of the Department of Modern Greek Studies of the University of the city and born Secretary of IDISME (Foundation for Historical Studies) will give a speech on "I am a Patriarch for this, how to save my nation", which will expand the local context and will refer to the pan-Hellenic character of the revolution. The event will end with the presentation of traditional dances by the dance department of the Cultural Association and the offer of a treat 3 to the attendees.

The event as a whole is addressed to the residents of Antirrio, but also to all the residents of the Municipality of Nafpaktia, since the surrender of the castle of Antirrio on March 13, 1829 paved the way for the liberation of Nafpaktos, almost a month later, on April 18, 1829. It is also addressed to all those who are interested and concerned about history, but also to those who find it difficult to approach and understand it, especially students and younger people. It also renews and enriches the collective memory and that is why it is completely in line with the real meaning of paying homage to the event that marked the birth of the modern Greek state, the Revolution of 1821.

Irini Sarioglou, researcher - historian, Assistant Professor of the Department of Modern Greek Studies of the University of the city and born secretary of IDISME (Foundation for Historical Studies) and another historian, member of the scientific team of IDISME, will give speeches and a presentation related to the historical events related to the liberation of Antirrio. The lectures, after covering this topic, can expand it beyond the narrow local and temporal contexts and can explore individual aspects, extend to broader topics, such as e.g. the policy of the Ottoman Empire in the Eastern Mediterranean, its conflicts with the Most Peaceful Republic of Venice or to refer to persons who played a decisive role at that time, such as e.g. the Placekeeper Augustinos Kapodistrias. The event as a whole, both in its content and in its level, but also with its scientific prestige and the reputation of the speakers, is addressed mainly to the residents of Antirrio, but also to all the residents of the Municipality of Nafpaktia, from at the time when the surrender of the castle of Antirrio on March 13, 1829 paved the way for the liberation of Nafpaktos, almost a month later, on April 18, 1829. It is also addressed to all those who are interested and concerned about history, but also to those who find it difficult to approach and understand it, especially students and younger people. It also renews and enriches the collective memory and therefore is fully in line with the real meaning of paying tribute to the event that marked the birth of the modern Greek state, the Revolution of 1821. Finally, with the open discussion that will follow, will be given the opportunity for speakers and attendees to exchange views on the above issues.

Note: IDISME and Mrs. Irini Sarioglou, at the invitation of the Cultural Association of Antirrio "Kastelli", have honored Nafpaktos with their presence and in the recent past, on December 14, 2019, with the screening of the historical documentary "The Anatoli edyse ", which is based on the book" The Asia Minor Campaign of Kostas Misailidis - His responses from the Front 1919-1922 ". The event was well attended and was enthusiastically received by the community of Nafpaktos.
