Holy Monastery of Makellaria

The Holy Monastery of Panagia Makellaria was built in 532 AD. on a steep bare rock, south of the settlement of Lapanagoi. Its original name was ""Panagia Lithariotissa"" or ""Lithostrotiotissa"" but because the monastery was destroyed in 1458 by the Turks and a great massacre took place, it took the nickname ""Makellaria"". According to tradition, an attempt was made to rebuild it under the rock, for protection reasons. However, every night the building collapsed and some of the materials and tools disappeared. After days, they were found at the top of the rock, in the current location of the monastery, and in a natural pit of the rock was found the icon of the Virgin Mary and a jar of oil. This point of interest is Mountainous and Rural. It is accessible all year round. It is not accessible through public transport. It has no fee or ticket. Winter hours: 09:00-16:00 | Summer hours: 09:00 – 13:00 & 16:30-20:00 Everyday (except Tuesday)  https://www.facebook.com/ieramonimakellarias Photo source: Official Website of the Municipality of Kalavrita, Tourist guide of the Municipality of Kalavrita: (www.discoverkalavrita.gr) & Wikipedia
