Monument

Place of sacrifice in Kalavrita

The Place of Sacrifice of the Kalavritans is a separate monument than the Holy Pilgrimage of the Kalavrytans, and is located to the east, on the ridge of Kapi. The "Holocaust of Kalavryta" took place on the spot on December 13, 1943, where the German occupiers executed all men aged 14 and over. Today, on the ridge there is a large Cross, a reminder of the heinous act, columns with the names of the victims and a catacomb with candlesticks as many as the families of the executed.

This point of interest is Mountainous and Urban. It is accessible all year round. It is accessible by public transport. There is no fee or ticket.

Alongside the catacomb dominates the stone sculpture of the ailing mother, emblem of the Municipality and symbol of human heartiness, created by the then student of the School of Fine Arts, Anna Vafeia. It has a symbolic character for the female heroines of Kalavryta (the mother, the sister, the grandmother, the daughter) who fought with great effort to rebuild the completely destroyed city.

Every year on December 13th, after the memorial service in the city's cathedral, the funeral procession ends at the Place of Sacrifice, where a memorial service and invocation of the Fallen is held.
