Odontotos railway of Diakopto - Kalavrita

The toothed railway (Odontotos) of Diakopto - Kalavryta is one of the most beautiful tourist attractions of the region. The route, which lasts about an hour, is one of the most beautiful in Greece and the enchanting natural landscape is indelibly imprinted in the memory. The end of the route, Kalavryta Station, is a building of particular architectural beauty, a landmark of the city.

This point of interest is Mountainous and Urban. It is accessible all year round. It is accessible by public transport. There is no fee or ticket. Daily: 09:00-15:30

About 120 years ago, the cog railway Diakopto-Kalavryta, starting from the coastal town of Diakopto and parallel to the tracks of the river, built bridges, dug tunnels, threw "teeth" and managed to climb up to Kalavryta.

From then until today, the Vouraikos river and Odontotos flow together. The train has integrated so well into the natural environment, it looks as if it has always been there. The way it was built did not burden the ecosystem of the canyon. With the wood and stone of the area, the technicians made for the sake of the train works that you think nature made by itself.

Odontotos is not just the "train". The Vouraikos gorge and the Diakopto-Kalavryta cog railway are a unique attraction in Greece.

An area where towns and villages abound, with hospitable inhabitants, with unique nature and with the flavor of Greek everyday life. To write the history of this place, whole volumes are needed. But the real taste will be given by the train journey! Odontotos starts from the railway station of Diakopto and follows the gorge of Vouraikos. After a distance of 22,350 meters in 60 minutes, it ends in the town of Kalavryta, 750 meters above sea level.

Construction works on the network began in 1889 and the inauguration took place on March 10, 1896.

From then until today, Odontotos travels every day, at all times of the year, whatever the weather. Line width: 0.75 meters, this particularity is what makes Odontotos the narrowest in the world.
