Church of Agios Athanasios

The Church of Agios Athanasios was built in 1100 in Chalandritsa. It is a Byzantine stone church, which is preserved in excellent condition with the help of some newer additions. Inside the church there are old holy relics with unique beauty and, for many people, it is characterized as a historic treasure.

This point of interest is Mountainous and Rural. It is accessible all year round. It is accessible through public transport. It has no fee or ticket.

The Byzantine Church of Agios Athanasios is preserved in excellent condition but with newer additions. In the sanctuary is located the wooden icon of Saint Athanasios marked by Turkish volleys in 1772. On the iconostasis there is a cross with two snakes (death and sin) that the visitor can admire. According to researcher L.K. Kornaros this Church is "one of the main religious monuments and places of pilgrimage that not only Chalandritsa has to show, but the entire Prefecture of Achaia".

Historical data

It was built in the 12th century. It was there that, according to tradition, in 1429, Thomas Palaiologos and Ekaterini, daughter of the last Frankish ruler and baron of Chalandritsa, married.
