Gorizia Castle, which houses the Museum of the Middle Ages in Gorizia, includes a permanent educational exhibition entitled Theatrum Instrumentorum. The objects on display in the spectacular Hall of the Provincial States of the medieval castle are musical instruments philologically reconstructed by local cabinetmakers based on the iconographic documentation that has been preserved, with the aim of reconstructing the history of European music between the 10th and 17th centuries. The exhibition offers a review of medieval and Renaissance musical mediums, and ancestors of our modern instruments, including psalteries, lyres, citolas, and harpsichords. Worthy of mention is a reconstructed portative organ based on a drawing made by Leonardo da Vinci.
