Honey House in Majkovi

The Dubrovnik coast has many interesting places, and Majkovi is definitely one of them. Apart from the fact that the first herpetological reserve in Croatia is located right there, which preserves the population of the river turtle - one of the rarest and most endangered species of reptiles in the Republic of Croatia, part of the famous Napoleon's road also passes through Majkovi, and you will certainly stop at the most beautiful viewpoint on the Adriatic, at the Gajina viewpoint in Gornji Majkovi. This sparsely populated place does not lack life, and that in harmony with nature, sustainable coexistence despite sometimes merciless natural conditions and difficulties. The hospitable inhabitants of Majkovi are mainly engaged in agriculture, olive growing, viticulture and beekeeping, so they will likely offer you a fresh bunch of herbs or local fruits and vegetables on every occasion.

In 2013, the House of Honey and Traditional Products was opened in Majkovi, a kind of contemporary beekeeping museum. The renovation of the old local school opened the doors to all curious people, who can find out all about the traditional products of the Dubrovnik Primorje, taste different types of honey and bee products. The museum space guides visitors through the process of honey production itself, with a unique display of the bee colony. Probably the most interesting thing for the youngest visitors is the apisarium, that is, a transparent glass beehive through which it is possible to observe the queen and her brood, honey and propolis without fear. Moreover, here you will soon find out why bears are not liked by bees or beekeepers; why the propolis drink is more effective than usual energy drinks; how queens live, how worker bees live and much more. In addition to numerous types of beehives in the Honey House and traditional products in Majkovi, large beeswax cakes stand out. The walls of the House of Honey are decorated with superb photographs, among which is a calendar of the flowering of honey plants in the Dubrovnik coast called the Garden of Paradise. Given that the Honey House was opened thanks to the tireless work of the Beekeeping Society of the Dubrovnik Coast, all beekeepers from the region who want to promote and sell their products are represented - original souvenirs, liqueurs, juices, jams and hand-painted decorative cushions with coastal motifs.

Fun fact: Bee products are among the rare types of food that do not require additional processing. They can be consumed directly, exactly as the bees made it. Despite advanced science, honey is a food that scientists have not yet succeeded in producing artificially.
